I was approached by a player who was interested in playing pro hockey. He said, “I want to play professional hockey, but don’t know if I’m getting noticed or how to even get a tryout”. When it comes to securing a tryout or getting noticed by professional, college or junior teams, you must be willing to do what it takes to reach the right people. Think of it as networking but with more of a personal connection. If you are working with an agent, then great. There are many qualified agents out there that are available to help but I do believe that you should be making a lot of connections on your own as well. If you are not working with an agent, you must be willing to contact teams. The basic information they need to know is: your name, age, height, weight, position, shot and stats. They will also be interested in where you’ve been playing the last few years, who your coaches are and why you would be an asset to them. With thousands of hockey players trying to play in the top leagues around the world, you have to find a way to separate yourself from the sea of others and clearly explaining why you are different and why they should pick you is a great start.

First you need to ask yourself, “am I training the right way”? When you are training and doing off-ice workouts, make sure you are giving it your all. Train like a hockey player, not a body builder and remember, hockey players don’t sport tank tops in the gym! You can find hockey specific workouts online or with your local strength and conditioning coach with different exercises hockey players use to develop muscle in the right areas. Your legs and core muscles are primary areas that hockey players need to develop. Also you should have a structured nutritional plan. Remember there are only so many coaches and scouts that are able to travel around and see players, so if you happen to not fall into their travel plans your chances of getting noticed are slim. Allowing coaches to see you on video first, is a good first step to give them confidence that you are worth actually going to see. Also, the best person to promote you, besides yourself, is your coach or another credible coach who has closely worked with you. Your coach watches you practice and play every week, and if they see that you are putting in the time, working hard and doing the extra things on and off the ice, they most likely will be willing to promote. Talk to your coach at the start of the season and let them know your goals and request their help and guidance.

Third, ensure you are attending any available open tryouts or summer tournaments that coaches and scouts are attending. Tournaments and tryouts are run throughout the summer in different geographic locations. These are great opportunities for teams to see you and learn more about who you are and what you have to offer. During the summer is when teams are less busy, so coaches and scouts have more opportunity to watch players. If you are planning on attending a summer tournament, be sure to contact teams of interest and let them know that you will be at this tournament on whatever date and inquire if they are able to attend. Also many professional teams hold open tryouts for players to attend. The minor professional teams often don’t have the budget to have scouts, so they use open tryouts to try and get players to attend so they can see and evaluate them in one central location. Check their websites for tryout dates or call the front office for more details. Whichever you decide to do, these are a great way to get noticed and get your name out there. When you attend these tournaments and tryouts, make sure to approach the coaches and management and engage in conversation and ask questions. Do not just show up hoping they will approach you. Be proactive and get yourself noticed!

In the end, you need to do what it takes to get teams interested in you and see who you are as a player. Connecting with these teams is very important unless you have someone doing this for you. Even if you do, be sure to follow up with them and make sure your being introduced to these teams and coaches. Relying on someone else to do the work, often can result in the work not being done. If you really want to play somewhere or take your game to the next level, make the contacts you need to get you there.

When you look at how the Maple Leafs season has gone, you will look back at it and see where it went right or where all of the sudden, went wrong. Although the season is not yet over and the Leafs are on the brink of not getting into playoffs, the biggest question will be, “What went wrong?” if they can’t manage to make it into playoffs.

Over the final stretch of the season, and more so, post trade deadline, the Leafs seem to have something missing.  When talking with people involved in hockey and with great hockey knowledge, they tend to think that the Leafs defense is the major cause of the problem.  The Maple Leafs offensively were pretty good, minus a couple ups and downs, but the biggest problem remained in the defensive zone. The Maple Leafs were outshot in the majority of games, leaving the goalies to have nightmares about the number of shots they would face on a given night.  That leads us to the goaltender situation. Jonathan Bernier was very good for the Leafs this year, and the biggest reason that the Leafs are even in the position to have a little light at the end of the tunnel to get into playoffs. James Reimer on the other hand is a different story. Reimer has seen many ups and downs this year, and with the lack of confidence in him from his coaching staff, may be the reason for Reimer’s poor showings.

The Maple Leafs defense is to me, the biggest cause of all the issues they are facing. Signing Dion Phaneuf to a very big, number one Defenceman type salary, was a mistake in my eyes. There is no comparison between Phaneuf and number one Dmen from other teams. Look at Zdeno Chara, Erik Karlsson, Shea Weber, those are big time defencemen, which Phaneuf does not compare too.  The other list of Maple Leaf defencman, Cody Franson, Jake Gardner, Tim Gleason, Carl Gunnarsson, Paul Ranger and Morgan Reilly are not going to provide the big punch the Leafs need. Reilly has the most potential of all the defenseman I see on the ice for the Leafs but is still a year or two away from reaching more potential and settling into his role.

Dave Nonis, the Leafs GM, should have definitely taken a look around the league for a defenseman that could help them make a push into the playoffs.  If the Maple Leafs cannot take advantage of the last three games of the season and hope that the Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings fall apart, then Leafs nation is going to be in for a disappointing and long summer off.

In hockey there are a select group of players that are able to combine skill, accuracy, patience and hockey sense in order to create and find that perfect scoring opportunity. But what if I told you that there is one Spot that can find the back of the net on most goalies throughout the hockey world. This one Spot is in a position where goalies have a tough time reacting too and finding the proper position necessary to make the save. In their head, they don’t know whether to use the blocker, glove, pad or stick to come across and stop the puck.
The Spot, lies just above the goal pad, which is 11 inches wide on a standard goaltending pad restricted by NHL rules. It is, on a left handed catching goaltenders, left side when looking straight at them, just under or beside the blocker or glove depending on how the goalie is positioned. Just inside the post is where you should be looking to shoot and depending on your angle you should just know that putting the puck in that area gives you a great opportunity to score.
In a 2011 study of goaltender Semyon Varlamov, the article talks about all aspects of both Capitals goaltenders and breaks down where goals are scored from, against who and things of that nature. As part of the study it always looked into the zones where most goals are scored. In the diagram below you will notice the percentages of where these goals went in on Varlamov.

I’m not sure if it was pure coincidence when I decided to write this article that I found this study or not, but I thought it was very interesting to see where the shots went in on such an established goaltender.
Through experience, I have also found the benefits of that location and was able to score a few goals there myself. I have played with goalies that, when you shoot there over and over again and find it a weakness for them, they become very frustrated and I think for themselves, they cannot identify the problem and understand why such a shot can go in consistently.
Every hockey player knows the game Rebound. It is a game usually played at the end of practice where five players play against a goaltender in a game up to 10. There is one shooter lined up at the hash-marks in front of the net and the other four players are positioned more towards the net, two on each side. The player shooting looks to score or give a rebound out so that his team has the chance to score on the goaltender. You are allowed one pass after the initial shot and after every following rebound. If there is a goal, 1 point for the players, a save, 1 point for the goalie. In this game you can really see how this shot can work. I have played many games of rebound throughout my career and have seen many players take advantage of this Spot. If you are able to freeze the goalie just enough, or get the shot off quick and in that location, your chance of scoring is very high.
Many great players, great goal scorers are able to find this Spot. It is a location in the net where a goal scorer can identify as a weakness to a goalie and find it every time. Watch an NHL or any hockey game on a given night and you will likely see at least one goal scored there.
